Medicare AEP or OEP?

There has been some confusion this year about the Medicare enrollment period.  Is it AEP (Annual Enrollment Period) or OEP (Open Enrollment Period)?

While AEP used to consist of the last part of the year, which then followed OEP for an additional time for Medicare beneficiaries to change plans, this year AEP and OEP are being used interchangeably to refer to the same time: October 15th through December 7th.  Any changes in this time would take place January 1st.

These enrollment times are for Medicare Advantage (Medicare Part C) and prescription drug plans (Medicare Part D).  Medicare supplements (Medigap) are still available all year, provided the client can pass underwriting (if applicable).
